My Girl was the first Temptations song to feature David Ruffin, and the first to reach number one. Uploaded by collegelifestyles.org

I’d like to know how many times I danced to this song during my teenage years. Seems every band, regardless of the type of music they performed, always played “My Girl” when they wanted to slow the tempo down. And everyone – everyone – loved this song.

I still do. It’s The Temptations’ signature song, their first number one hit. Written by Smokey Robinson and Miracles band mate Ronald White, it features David Ruffin singing the lead, his first lead with the Temptations but far from his last. It’s a Motown classic.

You recognize “My Girl” when you hear that or a distinctive six-note introduction that says, “Here comes some classic Motown magic.” Well, that’s what it says to me, at least. On Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, “My Girl” is ranked number 88. Scandalous.

  1. What a great sound the Temptations had, but the best thing about them to me was the choreography.  It was so smooth. And this is one of their greatest songs. Good choice
