Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr meet again in the final scene of An Affair to Remember. Uploaded by dignews.com.

Is An Affair to Remember (1957) the most romantic movie ever made? The American Film Institute ranks it number 5 in its 100 Years…100 Passions. But that list has West Side Story and Roman Holiday ahead of AATR, and that’s just plain silly. (Casablanca and Gone with the Wind were 1-2, and I grant you could make a case for those.)

I’m not sure I would ever have thought to pair Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, as terrific as they are individually. This was one of three picture they made together, and there’s no question about the chemistry they had here. The movie is a very faithful remake of 1939’s Love Affair with Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer. Don’t think Irene and Chuck had the same sparks flying. (It was also remade in 1994 with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. Zzzz.) Modern viewers might remember that Sleepless in Seattle is something of a paean to An Affair to Remember.

Best I can tell, the movie won no awards, and could have been just another love story from the 1950s that faded into obscurity. But too many people love it, and won’t let that happen. See it soon…and see it with someone you love.

It's easy to share with friends.
