It was the Bible, not Reader’s Digest, that first told us that laughter is the best medicine. With that being understood, perhaps we should call him Dr. Crystal. All he’s done is make us laugh for the last 40 years.

What do you consider his greatest contribution to American humor? Was it his groundbreaking role on the TV series Soap? Or his great characters on SNL? (I can’t resist repeating a couple of my favorite lines. As Fernando: “You look marvelous.” As Willie, with Christopher Guest: “I hate when that happens.”) Or his movies, including When Harry Met Sally and City Slickers. Or his wonderful Best Picture medleys at the Oscars?

Just making that list took me to some YouTube videos that brought back great memories. Thanks, Billy, for all the laughs. You’re one of a kind.

  1. Fantastic choice. Not only is this post a reminder of his great work and a pop culture history lesson, it’s most of all a nudge not to take so much for granted. So much talent in just one person, yet you have no shortage of (almost) equally Great American Things.
