Remember the great 1955 prison film Unchained? Well of course you don’t. But Alex North and Hy Zaret wrote a memorable theme song for the film that has become one of the most recorded songs of all time. And though there were other recordings that had good success, it’s the Righteous Brothers’ version that propelled “Unchained Melody” to all-time classic status.

Though the song was credited to the Righteous Brothers, it’s actually a solo by Bobby Hatfield, produced by Phil Spector. Surprisingly, when released originally in 1965 it only made it to number four on the Billboard chart. However, the song was featured in the 1990 film Ghost, and its re-release made it to number one on the Adult Contemporary chart.
