Appreciating all that makes America special

“You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch”

No one could have written these lyrics but Dr. Seuss. They’re loopy, sinister – and perfect. Uploaded by fanpop.com.

It’s a high point of one of the high points of the Christmas season (you know, “the holidays”). There are lots of good reasons to watch the 1966 animated classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but one of the best is this wonderfully written song, with lyrics by Dr. Seuss and music by Albert Hague.

The song is perfectly performed by Thurl Ravenscroft. Ravenscroft had a dual career as a singer (Remember the Johnny Mann Singers?) and voiceover actor. The two things for which he’s best remembered are this song and as the voice of Tony the Tiger for Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes. And we can say of both, “They’re grrrreat!”

The song has six verses, and seems to get more intense in its dislike for The Grinch as it progresses. It concludes with this wonderfully sinister vers

You’re a rotter, Mr. Grinch

You’re the king of sinful sots,

Your heart’s a dead tomato

Splotched with moldy purple spots, Mr. Grinch

You’re a three-decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich with arsenic sauce
